Floating the Shenandoah River: Kayaking, Tubing & Outfitters Near Front Royal

If there’s one thing I wish more guests knew about before they showed up, it’s the river.

Everybody comes to Front Royal for Shenandoah National Park, and the park deserves it. But the Shenandoah River, winding right through the valley below, is the thing people fall in love with once they’re here. On a warm day there’s nothing better than a slow float downstream with a cooler and no particular place to be.

Here’s how to do it right.

A quick lay of the land

The Shenandoah has two forks — the North Fork and the South Fork — that meet near Front Royal before heading north. For floating, tubing, and easy paddling, the South Fork is the one most folks use. It’s gentle, scenic, and forgiving, which is exactly what you want with kids or first-timers.

Our Tree House sits a stone’s throw from the water, and there’s public river access on Farms River Road, about 200 yards north of the house. Some of our guests have floated and tubed down from the low-water bridge at Morgan Ford Road and exited right there at the public access point. It’s a popular local stretch for a reason.

Tubing — the easiest way in

Tubing is the no-experience-required option. You rent a tube, an outfitter shuttles you upstream, and you float back down at the river’s pace. It’s lazy in the best way.

A few tips from hosting a lot of first-time floaters:

  • Go with an outfitter your first time. They handle the shuttle, which is the part that trips people up. Local outfitters around Front Royal and Bentonville run tube, kayak, and canoe trips through the summer.
  • Check the water level. Too low and you’ll be scraping bottom; too high (usually after heavy rain) and they may close trips for safety. The outfitter will know the day’s conditions — call ahead.
  • Wear shoes you can get wet. The riverbed is rocky. Flip-flops disappear; strap-on sandals or old sneakers are the move.

Kayaking & canoeing

If you’d rather have a little more control, kayaks and canoes are widely available to rent, and the South Fork’s mellow stretches are very beginner-friendly. You’ll cover more ground than tubing and can actually steer toward the good spots — quiet pools, gravel bars, shade.

For anglers, the Shenandoah is famous for smallmouth bass. Bring a Virginia fishing license and you can drift and cast at the same time.

What to bring

  • Sunscreen, and then more sunscreen — there’s not much shade on the water
  • Plenty of water to drink (the river sun is deceptive)
  • A dry bag or a small cooler that won’t tip
  • Water shoes
  • A hat and sunglasses
  • A trash bag — pack out what you bring in; this river’s worth keeping clean

A note on safety

The Shenandoah is mostly gentle, but it’s still a moving river. Wear a life jacket — outfitters provide them — keep an eye on kids, and don’t float after heavy rain when the water’s running high and fast. When in doubt, ask the outfitter. They run this river every day, and they’ll tell you straight whether it’s a good day to go.

Where to stay on the water

The closer you are to the river, the easier all of this gets. Our Tree House is built for exactly this kind of trip — three bedrooms, a fenced yard, a private pond, and a hot tub for soaking tired muscles after a day on the water. Public river access is a short walk away, and downtown Front Royal and the park are both close by.

Floating season really hits its stride in summer.

See you on the water,

James

Heads up for guests: river conditions change with the weather, so message me before your stay and I’ll let you know how the water’s looking and which outfitters are running trips that week.
